UX/UI Designer

We are looking for an experienced and creative UI/UX Designer to join our team!


In 2018, Aviro launched Ithaka, a multichannel (web, WhatsApp chatbot, and offline app) digital counsellor that supports patients navigating health and linkage to care.  We are currently primarily supporting HIV self-testing but are expanding to other use cases this year. In the previous 2 years we have (1) built the tool and successfully piloted it in studies with Johns Hopkins, Wits University and others; (2) signed high-profile health providers who are scaling the tool this year (20k+ users to date); and (3) secured funding to support our scaling strategy.  We are making a big push this year to refine and improve the platform for international scaling. We have a strong team in place from client management, engineering, business and health perspective, data science, but we require a full time UX/UX designer with strong experience in collecting, researching, investigating and evaluating user requirements. The responsibility is to deliver an outstanding user experience providing an exceptional and intuitive application design.

You will be expected to:

  • Gather and evaluate user requirements, in collaboration with product managers, client managers and engineers for internal processes,products and projects.
  • Illustrate design ideas using storyboards, process flows and sitemaps
  • Design graphic digital user interface elements for mobile, web and bots

As an UI-UX Designer, you will be responsible for delivering the best online user experience, which makes your role extremely important for our success and ensuring customer satisfaction and loyalty. You will be designing ideas using various methods and the latest technology. You will be designing graphic user interface elements, like menus, tabs, forms, bots, and widgets, and many more.

Ultimately, you’ll create both functional and appealing features that address our clients’ needs and help us grow our customer base. No pressure at all.Most of all we are looking for a team player that can work in an agile environment and work as part of a collaborative team.

Responsibilities (because we got to have some)

  • Gather and evaluate user requirements in collaboration with product managers, client managers, project managers, data science and engineers.
  • Illustrate design ideas using storyboards, process flows and sitemaps
  • Plan and implement new designs
  • Optimize existing user interface designs
  • Test for intuitivity and experience
  • Communicate with clients to understand their business goals and objectives
  • Develop technical and business requirements and always strive to deliver intuitive and user-centered solutions
  • Combine creativity with an awareness of the design elements
  • Create original graphic designs (e.g. images, sketches and tables)
  • Develop UI mockups and prototypes that clearly illustrate how sites function and look like
  • Create prototypes for new product ideas
  • Prepare and present rough drafts to internal teams and key stakeholders
  • Identify and troubleshoot UX problems (e.g. responsiveness)
  • Test new ideas before implementing
  • Conduct an ongoing user research
  • Conduct layout adjustments based on user feedback

Requirements (You actually need to have done this before)

  • Proven work experience as a UI/UX Designer or similar role
  • Portfolio of design projects
  • Ability to discuss and explain design options and communication skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Critical thinker
  • Problem solver and customer-centered
  • Expertise in standard design  software such as Sketch, Figma, OmniGraffle, Axure, InVision, UXPin, Balsamiq, Framer, and the like is a must
  • Team spirit; strong communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders
  • Good time-management skills
  • Bachelor’s degree  in Design, Computer Science or relevant field

Contract length: 6 months to start

Location: Cape Town or Johannesburg
